Book Description

How can university teachers create learning environments in which all students can thrive? And how can inclusive teaching practices help address persistent ethnicity awarding gaps in higher education?

This practical toolkit brings together examples of innovative and effective teaching from across the University of Sussex, backed up by insights from sector-wide research and practice. Developed through collaboration with students and educators, it highlights approaches that place inclusion, participation and belonging at the heart of teaching and learning.

Through detailed case studies drawn from a range of disciplines, readers will discover practical strategies for diversifying curricula, designing inclusive assessments, using active and team-based learning, strengthening student engagement and creating more supportive learning communities.

The toolkit is organised in six sections for ease of reference:

  1. Decolonising the curriculum
  2. Seminars
  3. Lectures
  4. Team-based learning and group work
  5. Assessment
  6. Academic skills and student support

Each contribution describes a specific practice, explains its context and explores how the outcomes link to evidence-informed approaches associated with narrowing ethnicity awarding gaps: decolonising the curriculum and anti-racist pedagogy, co-creation of the curriculum, inclusive assessment, student engagement, fostering a sense of belonging, and academic skills and student support.

The result is an accessible, action-oriented resource for lecturers, tutors, educational developers and academic leaders seeking to create more equitable learning environments.

While its primary focus is on narrowing ethnicity awarding gaps, the toolkit has much wider potential to enhance inclusive teaching across a range of aspects of lived experience, including protected characteristics and from an intersectional perspective. It has broader relevance for anyone interested in inclusive pedagogy, curriculum transformation and student success in higher education.
